New Research On Slipped Disc Cases Reveals Surgery Is Not The Answer

Past Admins, 6 years ago

Back pain today is one of the most common medical problems, affecting 8 out of 10 people at some point during their lives. Intensive research on back pain treatment has led to new Guidelines in Europe. Of the many recommendations the most significant one states that Surgery is not to be prescribed as the first line of treatment. Another alarming recommendation is that the prescription of MRI & X-rays is not advised as long term results have shown that these imaging tests identify the cause of back pain only in only 15% of cases.

Evidence now shows that surgery does not offer better results in relief from pain, disability or enhance quality of life when compared to precise conservative targeted treatment. Over 40% of surgeries in the spine need to be repeated within 10 years.

Slipped Disc Cases Getting Younger And More Acute

Slipped discs are getting most common in those aged 25 to 45 because the disc is still soft in the middle (as we age it dries and stiffens, and so doesn’t bulge out as easily).

The case of 32 year Aman Verma is an example of why such changes in guidelines around the world are essential. At the young age of 27 he suffered a slipped disc and had pain radiating down both his legs. He was advised to meet a senior orthopedic doctor who recommended traction and bed rest for 2 months. In severe pain and unable to use a wash room he then visited a neurologist who prescribed an epidural injection despite which the pain still persisted. He had decided against surgery which was prescribed as it came with no promises of complete recovery from his pain and limited mobility. He decided to accept his condition and live his life with this disability. His orthopedic doctor then recommended a more specialized slip disc treatment in Mumbai offered at the Qi Spine Clinic.

Aman is back on his feet today, running and engaged in an active lifestyle after a full day at work. Over 90% of herniated disc or disc bulge cases are caused by inadequate muscular support in that region. The load bearing capacity of muscles once compromised leads to a slow deterioration process and unless these muscles are identified and targeted precisely the problem will reoccur.
