In recent times, we have seen a lot in gender equality such as #Me Too, #Times Up, etc. the voices have grown stronger and louder than ever. Women have come a long way to carve a niche for themselves in the corporate world. Several women have broken the glass ceiling, made the impossible possible and earned accolades for the nation as well as for themselves.
We have seen many women find their voices, standing up for themselves but the point is has life changed for an ordinary woman at work? It is not roses everywhere; some of us are luckily a part of such organizations where gender equality is practised and promoted. As one would expect, the world has begun listening more intently than before.
Today, women are an intrinsic part of both the workplace and home. Pain or disability in the workplace generally goes unsaid or unheard!
Do you know that
back pain is a leading cause of disability and the most common reason for medical consultations?
Back pain is usually acute and self-limited.
A
study shows that the overall prevalence of low back pain is higher in women than in men.
Let’s see what conditions typically affect women –
Women are susceptible to back pain and related conditions which can turn chronic over a period of time.
Low back pain further increases with female menopause age.
- Coccydynia(tailbone pain) – It is a pain felt in your tailbone i.e. coccyx, the last bone at the base of your spine. It occurs due to injury, poor posture, injury, childbirth, etc. Coccydynia can absolutely make it impossible for you to carry out day-to-day activities.
- Endometriosis– It is a common health problem in women and is extremely painful. Endometriosis can give rise to pelvic pain, back pain, leg pain and painful bowel movements.
- Pregnancy– Menstrual cycle fluctuations, menopause, pregnancy and childbearing, peril-menopausal abdominal weight gain are some of the causes for low back pain in women.
- Lumbardisc degeneration – It’s a common musculoskeletal condition, the prevalence of which increases with age and can progress to disc herniation, spinal canal stenosis.
- Sacroiliacjoint dysfunction – Sacroiliac (SI) joint connects the bottom of your spine to your pelvis. Women typically have a smaller SI joint surface area as compared to men and hence results in higher stress across the joint. SI joint dysfunction causes lower back pain, achy pain over the buttocks and sharp pain down your thigh.
- Spinalosteoporosis – Osteoporosis is characterized by thin, weak bones that can easily get fractured and occurs when there is a higher rate of bone loss compared to new bone formation. Post-menopausal women are 4 times more likely to develop osteoporosis than men.
- Fibromyalgia– It is a condition that causes pain all over the body. It is more common in women than in men. It’s prevalent in people who smoke or are obese or suffer from another rheumatic condition. Physical trauma from injury and emotional trauma can also lead to fibromyalgia.
Women, it’s time, you need to start taking care of your body. Your health should remain your topmost priority. If you experience neck pain or back pain, then don’t ignore, get your spine health checked. Proper measures at the right time can soothe your spine and save you from that nagging pain.
This women’s day take out time to visit a
spine specialist if you suffer from any of the above conditions.
Happy Women’s Day!
