The pandemic has changed individual behavior both due to lifestyle changes and physiological effects of covid-19 on the human body which has resulted in enhanced cases of
Back Pain.
Back pain is the most common musculoskeletal complain across the world resulting in numerous sick leaves. Back pain specifically due to Covid-19 has increased the burden on the economy and the healthcare sector and has also deteriorated the quality of life.
A. Covid related causes of Back Pain are:
- Altered Lifestyle
- Work from home culture resulted in decreased mobility
- Reduced physical activity
- Binge-watching
- Disturbed sleep cycle
B.Physiological effects
Coronavirus is a respiratory illness caused by SARS-COV-2 with back pain being the most common symptom.
If infected by Covid-19, it stimulates the release of cytokines like interleukin by the body’s immune system. It further stimulates the formation of prostaglandin E2 molecule that acts on nerves and signals our brain of pain
C. Covid medicine induced back pain
In a few moderate to severe covId cases, there has been long-term administration of steroids which has resulted in osteopenia,
osteoporosis, AVN causing back pain.
